What is Server TPS and Why Does It Matter?
Have you noticed your world feel slow or actions take longer than they should? In this article you will learn what TPS means, what pulls it down, and how to keep it healthy during normal play.
TPS in one minute
TPS means ticks per second. Minecraft aims for 20 TPS. When TPS drops, everything slows down. Blocks break late, mobs move oddly, and redstone feels off. Your goal is to keep TPS close to 20 during normal play with your group.
What affects TPS
Big farms, many entities and very high simulation distance add more work each tick. Heavy modpacks also add logic that the server must process. If your PC is busy with other programmes, that can reduce the time available for each tick too.
How to keep TPS healthy
Start with sensible view and simulation distance. Keep farms tidy and avoid leaving thousands of items on the ground. Give the server enough RAM for your player count and pack. If RAM is fine but TPS still drops, the limit is probably CPU, so close heavy apps and reduce busy redstone.
