How to Reduce Lag on SquidServers Minecraft Server

Fixes that help most on SquidServers including RAM, CPU, settings, and routing.

Lag makes everything feel slow. In this guide you will learn the fixes that help most on SquidServers. You will check RAM, CPU, entities, settings, and routing. Make one change at a time, then test, so you know what actually helped.

Start with a quick health check

Before you tweak settings, note when lag happens. Does it spike during flying, combat, or teleports. Is it only in one area. Did you add a mod just before the lag started. Write this down so you can test the right thing first.

Give the server enough RAM

RAM holds chunks, entities, and mods in memory. If there is not enough, you will feel stutters. In SquidServers, use the Memory Allocation slider.

  • 1 to 5 players on vanilla: 2 to 3 GB
  • 6 to 10 players on vanilla: 4 GB
  • 11 to 20 players on vanilla: 6 GB
  • Modpacks: add 2 to 4 GB

If you add RAM and lag remains, the limit may be CPU, not memory.

Close heavy background apps

Your computer runs the server and maybe your game too. Close browsers, launchers, video tools, and large editors while you host. This frees CPU and RAM and often removes spikes on its own.

Reduce view and simulation distance

These two settings decide how much work the server does each tick. Lower them when many people are online or when the world feels busy. This spreads CPU work over time and keeps ticks near 20.

Keep entities under control

Large mob farms, constant hopper clocks, and piles of dropped items increase server work. Tidy farms, use storage, and avoid leaving thousands of items on the ground. Ask your group to turn off automation when it is not needed.

Match Java, loader, and versions

A mismatch can cause slow starts, errors, and lag. Make sure your Java version fits the mods you use. Make sure your loader and Minecraft version match the pack or plugin set. If lag started right after a change, remove that change and test again.

Improve routing for far away players

If your friends are far from the default route, their ping can be higher. In SquidServers, open the dashboard, choose Manage Tunnels, click the computer icon in the top right, and set up a premium routing region that is closer to your players. You can check expected latency at ping.playit.gg before you choose.

Test and lock your baseline

After each change, play for ten minutes with two or three friends. Fly, fight, and teleport. When it feels smooth, write down your RAM, distances, and any routing change. This becomes your baseline for future sessions.
