How to Host a Minecraft Server with Custom Mods

From a fresh world to a custom mod list using a clean, version-safe flow.

Want a server with your own hand-picked mods? In this article you will learn a steady method that avoids common crashes and makes upgrades easy later.

Choose versions first

Pick your loader and Minecraft version and confirm every mod supports them. Check the Java version the mods expect. If not listed, Java 21 is a good starting point.

Build the server

Create the server with your chosen loader. Place your mods into the mods folder and include any library mods. Start the server and look for the first error. If it boots cleanly, invite one friend to test before a full group joins.

Grow the pack slowly

Add new mods one by one and play a short session after each change. Keep a text file with the date and what you added. This makes it easy to roll back if something misbehaves later.
