Pick the right server type

Choose Vanilla for a clean start. Choose Paper if you want plugins. Choose Modpack if you plan to run a pack. Match the Minecraft version to what you and your friends plan to play.

Set memory with the slider

Start with 2 to 3 GB for 1 to 5 vanilla players, 4 GB for 6 to 10, and 6 GB for 11 to 20. For modpacks add 2 to 4 GB. Play a short session, then adjust.

Keep files tidy

Pick a clear save folder, use simple names, and avoid moving files while the server is running. When you make changes later, change one thing at a time so you can see what helped.
