How to Choose the Right Minecraft Server RAM (And Why It Matters)

Simple RAM picks that work for most groups and how to spot when RAM is not the fix.

Not sure how much memory your server needs? In this article you will learn a simple way to pick a starting amount, plus signs that RAM is not the real bottleneck.

Quick starting points

  • 1 to 5 players on vanilla: 2 to 3 GB
  • 6 to 10 players on vanilla: 4 GB
  • 11 to 20 players on vanilla: 6 GB
  • Modpacks: add 2 to 4 GB

Different Minecraft versions and modpacks change the numbers, so treat these as a start. Test with friends, then adjust.

Signs you need more RAM

You see regular stutters, long chunk loading, or crash logs that mention memory. Players rubber band when exploring or teleporting. Adding memory improves the feel during flying and large fights.

When RAM is not the fix

If memory looks fine but the world still slows down when a lot is happening, the CPU may be the limit. Close heavy apps and reduce simulation distance. Change one thing at a time and see what helps.
